Community-Based Aboriginal Teacher Education Program
This certificate program, scheduled part-time over two-years is offered in partnership with Aboriginal communities and consists of work in the classroom of a mentor teacher, courses, and practice teaching. Courses are delivered through distance education (radio or telephone) and by face-to-face classes during the summer months in the sponsoring communities.
On-campus Aboriginal Teacher Education Program
The certificate program, scheduled part-time over two-years, is offered to individuals who are First Nations, Inuit or Métis. The program consists of work in a classroom, courses, and practice teaching. Courses are delivered in Ottawa or in First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities during the summer. Fall and winter courses are delivered by distance education. There are 60 days of practice teaching during the two-year program.
Successful completion of the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program leads to certification by the Ontario College of Teachers to teach in the Primary/Junior division (junior kindergarten to grade 6). Graduates also receive a certificate from the University of Ottawa. Graduates of the University of Ottawa ATEP Certificate Program who submit proof of an undergraduate degree, including 15 full courses or the equivalent, within 10 years of receiving their certificate, will also receive a baccalaureate in education degree.
