Vincent Martin-Schreiber is currently pursuing his PhD under the guidance of Professor Jean-Laurent Domingue. His research focuses on examining the causal mechanisms leading to the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder from a critical realist viewpoint. Prior to entering the field of nursing, Vincent gained experience in the IT sector. His primary clinical nursing experience has been in mental health across France, Quebec, and Ontario. He holds a Master of Engineering from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Science from Sorbonne Université in Paris.

Would you like to use hundreds of CPU cores or GBs of memory? Can’t fit your calculations on a single computer? Do you want your software to be able to scale without limits? Then distributed computing might be for you! Especially on the Alliance clusters this can make your program much faster.

We will explore the Message Passing Interface (MPI) which let processes talk to each other. We will be using C++, but the same concepts work on Python, Java, Fortran, etc. as well.

Certain kinds of algorithms consists of doing the same calculations on a lot of data points. For example, particle simulations or matrix manipulations.

These are the kind of things the GPUs excel at since its closely related to what they were originally designed for, manipulating pixels quickly. However, a GPU has its own memory (multiple types even!) and processors, so for best performance that needs to managed.

In this seminar, we will demonstrate how to get started on GPU programming.

This is the first of two sessions. This first session introduces coding-free means of data-scraping with hands-on exercises to learn about browser tools and scraping with Google sheets. It will also provide a brief overview of the legal and ethical context of data scraping. Additional tools for web scraping such as paid scraping software and browser extensions will be discussed.

This is the second of two sessions. This second session introduces obtaining data programmatically using Python and Jupyter notebooks. Participants will learn how to scrape and parse data using HTML requests and Python libraries and output the data to Excel. Then, participants will learn how to obtain data from YouTube via an API provided through Google Developer accounts.

Description: Programs created with C++ are much faster than similar programs in pure Python or JavaScript for example. Factors of 50 are not unheard of.

The cost for this is that C++ is harder to master and that is what this bootcamp is for. This workshop will get you up and running quickly with C++ programming. We will look at setting up your environment, revision control with Git, developing and dissecting basic C++ programs while covering coding best practices.

You'll start at the beginning and learn basics before diving deeper into more advanced topics. The essentials will be reviewed - statements and expressions, variables, conditionals, operators, loops, and functions. More complex topics will also cover data structures, classes and objects, and error handling. The Standard Template Library (STL) will also be introduced as a precursor to optimizing and improving performance of your code.

For this workshop, we will be using Visual Studio Code (https://code.visualstudio.com/). Please make sure you have it installed. We will compile and run our code on a remote cluster so that everyone is on the same platform.

There will be five morning sessions running from 17 to 21 October. Each morning will be from 9:00 to 12:00
