Overview

First presentation (English) 鈥 Enhancing efficiency and student autonomy with a local directed self-placement test

This presentation reports on the ongoing development and piloting of a new self-directed placement tool at our institution for English and French credit courses at the University of Ottawa. Students are placed into these courses with a placement test; unfortunately, instructors spend too much time in the first few weeks of the semester moving misplaced students. It is not uncommon for as many as a third of students in a class to be moved.

Given these problems with the current test, we saw the opportunity to completely reconsider our approach to placement, by introducing a directed self-placement tool. Directed self-placement (DSP) refers to a collection of assessment approaches where students are given the power and the information necessary to decide which course would suit them best (Aull, 2021).

Our objectives with this project are the following:

  • To make our placement testing more effective; and
  • To create an innovative testing process which empowers students to use assessment to reflect on their language learning strengths and needs.

To meet our objectives, we have developed a pilot DSP tool with authentic student samples at each level of performance, as well as descriptions of common activities in each course鈥攙erified by several instructors who have experience teaching all levels of the program. In this presentation, we will focus on the context-specific considerations and the challenges met in this ongoing development.

Deuxi猫me pr茅sentation (en fran莽ais)  Le Test de Classement d鈥橢spagnol Langue 脡trang猫re : un test ax茅 sur les 茅tudiants et leur comp茅tence 脿 communiquer en espagnol dans diff茅rents contextes

Cette pr茅sentation porte sur le d茅veloppement du Test de Classement d鈥橢spagnol Langue 脡trang猫re (T-EL脡), un outil de classement qui fait participer les 茅tudiants dans leur processus de classement.  L鈥櫭塩ole de langues de l鈥橴niversit茅 Laval 茅tait 脿 la recherche d鈥檜n test de classement en espagnol depuis 2018 afin de remplacer celui qui 茅tait en place et qui ne correspondait plus 脿 l鈥檃pproche adopt茅e par le programme d鈥檈nseignement. Le secteur d鈥檈spagnol avait alors besoin d鈥檜n test de classement adapt茅 脿 ses plans de cours et ax茅 sur les 茅tudiants et leur comp茅tence 脿 communiquer en espagnol dans diff茅rents contextes. C鈥檈st ainsi que le T-EL脡 a 茅t茅 d茅velopp茅 dans le but de correspondre 脿 ces besoins.

Le T-EL脡 est un outil de classement qui se divise en trois 茅tapes : un pr茅-test (辫谤茅罢-贰尝脡), un questionnaire sur le profil de l鈥檃pprenant (Usted y el espa帽ol) et une s茅rie de questionnaires orient茅s sur l鈥檜sage de la langue. Le 辫谤茅罢-贰尝脡 et le questionnaire Usted y el espa帽ol ont pour but de faire participer les 茅tudiants dans leur propre processus de classement. Les questionnaires, pour leur part, servent 脿 茅valuer de mani猫re objective l鈥檜sage de la langue ainsi qu鈥櫭 confirmer la perception que les 茅tudiants ont de leur propre niveau d鈥檈spagnol. Une formule a 茅t茅 con莽ue dans le but de mener 脿 la classification finale des 茅tudiants selon les donn茅es obtenues pour chacune de trois 茅tapes. Jusqu鈥櫭 pr茅sent, les r茅sultats obtenus depuis la mise en 艙uvre du T-EL脡 montrent un taux 茅lev茅 d鈥檈fficacit茅 et de validit茅.
