The Awards of Excellence ceremony is a cherished tradition of the Alumni Association, celebrating the accomplishments of our alumni and 91精品黑料吃瓜 supporters. This year鈥檚 event will be an evening filled with stories of leadership, service, and philanthropic impact. The recipients exemplify the spirit of excellence that defines 91精品黑料吃瓜, and each has led positive change through their careers and community contributions.

Meet the eight 2025 Awards of Excellence winners

Norman H茅bert

Meritas Tabaret Award for Alumni Achievement: Norman H茅bert (LLL 鈥80)

Norman H茅bert (LLL 鈥80) is a visionary business figure who led an extraordinary career in the Canadian automotive sector. As president and CEO of Groupe Park Avenue for four decades, Norman grew the family business into one of Quebec鈥檚 largest automotive groups, employing over 1,000 people. Although Norman has many engagements in his hometown of Montreal, he has always made it a priority to stay connected with the University of Ottawa. Since 2007, the Norman H茅bert Scholarship has been awarded more than a dozen times and was the Faculty of Law鈥檚 first prestigious scholarship, covering a student鈥檚 full tuition. Norman also chairs the civil law section鈥檚 Alumni Advisory Council, which advances the Faculty of Law鈥檚 long term strategic plan and its philanthropic ambitions.  

Dr. Jeffrey Weitz

University Builder Award: Dr. Jeffrey Weitz (MD 鈥76)

Dr. Jeffrey Weitz (MD 鈥76) is a professor of medicine and biochemistry at McMaster University and executive director of the Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute. He is committed to securing more equitable access to medical care for Indigenous peoples across Canada. To that end, Dr. Weitz has made a planned legacy gift to 91精品黑料吃瓜 that will provide funds for Indigenous medical students in need鈥攕upport he hopes will lead to fair, respectful, and culturally safe medical care for all Indigenous peoples. In addition to his philanthropy, Dr. Weitz remains in close contact with 91精品黑料吃瓜鈥檚 Faculty of Medicine. He is an officer of the Order of Canada and has received numerous accolades from the medical community for his leadership in the fields of thrombosis and hemostasis.  

Brianna Hennessy

Alumni of the Year Award: Brianna Hennessy (BSc 鈥08, Women's Rugby '03-04)

Para canoeist and wheelchair rugby player Brianna Hennessy (BSc 鈥08, Women's Rugby '03-04) embodies resilience, adaptability, and excellence in sport. After a 2014 accident left her with limited mobility and chronic pain, she turned to sport for strength, excelling in wheelchair rugby and later para canoe. She has since represented Canada on the world stage, earning multiple international podium finishes including silver in the VL2 outrigger canoe event at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. Whether in competition or through her community service, Brianna is a trailblazer for promoting inclusion and empowerment through sport, demonstrating that no obstacle is insurmountable when you face it with determination and perseverance.  

Huguette鈥疞abelle

Award for Commitment to the University: Dr. Huguette Labelle (BScN 鈥60, MEd 鈥68, PhD 鈥80)

Dr. Huguette Labelle (BScN 鈥60, MEd 鈥68, PhD 鈥80, Honorary Doctorate 鈥85) is one of the University of Ottawa鈥檚 most eminent supporters. She was chancellor of the university between 1994 and 2012, a period that saw remarkable growth and prominence for our campus. As governor emeritus, Dr. Labelle remains deeply influential in the 91精品黑料吃瓜 community, gracious with her counsel and support and a generous donor to student bursaries and scholarships. Prior to her time at 91精品黑料吃瓜, Dr. Labelle held many senior roles within the Canadian civil service, including as president of the Canadian International Development Agency and Deputy Minister of Transport. As a volunteer, Dr. Labelle contributes to countless national and international initiatives, including those focused on the promotion of Franco-Ontarian culture, global health, sustainable development, and the future of postsecondary education.  

H茅ritier Bilaka

Future Makers Award: H茅ritier Bilaka (BAV/BFA 鈥23)

H茅ritier Bilaka (BAV/BFA 鈥23) is a Canadian visual artist whose paintings explore the spiritual dimensions of the human condition in relation to the environment. Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, H茅ritier draws inspiration from traditional Bantu culture, which has a matriarchal vision of society. Based in Ottawa, he has participated in many physical and online group exhibitions in Canadian and European cities. H茅ritier鈥檚 artistic endeavours have been recognized with many honours, including the City of Ottawa鈥檚 Equity and Inclusion in the Arts Fund鈥檚 Seed Award and the Ontario Arts Council鈥檚 Research and Creation grant.  

Avesta鈥疉lani

Future Makers Award: Avesta Alani (BSocSc 鈥17)

Avesta Alani (BSocSc 鈥17) is a dedicated advocate for disability rights and public service workers. Born legally blind, one of Avesta鈥檚 personal missions is to change public perception towards people with disabilities. As a long-time board member of the National Education Association for Disabled Students, she has pushed for greater financial support for students with disabilities, efforts that have impacted students at 91精品黑料吃瓜 and nationwide. A lawyer and in-house counsel for the Public Service Alliance of Canada, she also leverages her legal expertise to champion workers鈥 rights across the country. Avesta gives back to 91精品黑料吃瓜 as a board member of the university鈥檚 Fulcrum Society and as a mentor to many law students.  

Dre鈥疜ona鈥疻illiams

Award for Community Service: Dr. Kona Williams (MD 鈥09)

Dr. Kona Williams (MD 鈥09) is a trailblazer in the field of forensic pathology and the first Indigenous forensic pathologist in Canada. Dr. Williams, who is Cree and Mohawk, has worked extensively in northern Ontario where she has served to bridge and strengthen relationships between First Nations communities and provincial pathology organizations. She has also worked on high-profile and complex issues, including residential schools and cases involving missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. In each engagement, Dr. Williams鈥 connection to spirit, heart, mind, and Indigenous ways of being and doing has enabled her to uplift and empower Indigenous communities.  

Jean Trebek

Honorary Member of the Alumni Association: Jean Trebek

Jean Trebek is a valued member of the 91精品黑料吃瓜 community. She and her late husband, Alex Trebek, have been generous donors and supporters.  Since Mr. Trebek鈥檚 passing in 2020, Jean has carried forward his legacy with 91精品黑料吃瓜 through her involvement in the Alex Trebek Distinguished Lecture Series, one of the most well-attended alumni events each year. Jean鈥檚 continued commitment to Mr. Trebek鈥檚 alma mater encourages the researchers supported by the Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue as well as his scholarship recipients. She co-hosts the Inside Wink podcast, which aims to encourage kinder living and sharing the good in the world.  It features interviews about courage, creativity, practical wisdom and transformative ideas.

The evening will be co-hosted by Kafia Barkat (B.Sc '15) and Justin Thibault (B.Sc.Soc '11), two renowned hosts and proud 91精品黑料吃瓜 alumni.

Kafia Barkat

Kafia Barkat (B.Sc '15)

Kafia Barkat (B.Sc '15) is a highly motivated Senior Business Expert and a member of 91精品黑料吃瓜鈥檚 Board of Governors with over 10 years of customer relations experience. An Alumni of the University of Ottawa in Biomedical Sciences, her journey into technology led her to various roles with companies such as Apple, IBM and as a consultant for Canadian crown corporations.

Justin Thibault

Justin Thibault (BScSoc'11, BA'13, MBA'22)

Justin Thibault (BScSoc'11, BA'13, MBA'22) is the Director of the Citizen Interaction Service for the City of Gatineau and a former member of 91精品黑料吃瓜鈥檚 Board of Governors. He leverages his studies in political science, psychology, and management, applied in roles at the University of Ottawa, in California, and as a consultant for major organizations.

Nicholas Deek

Nicholas Deek (BMus鈥14, Cross Country Men's '17-18)

With over 100 performances a year, Nicholas has a very active performance schedule as a pianist in Ottawa and surrounding areas.

As a performer, Nicholas connects with audiences in delivering elegant and passionate performances in a wide range of styles and genres. Nicholas is part of many ensembles and frequently collaborates with other musicians and vocalists. 

Nicholas Deek has performed across Canada, in the United States and in England. Nicholas was a quarterfinalist in the Fifth Canadian Chopin Piano Competition, in Toronto. He holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Piano Performance from the University of Ottawa, as well as an ARCT in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. Nicholas has a private piano studio of about 20 students.
