Mila Gorodnichy, a third-year biochemistry student, will be working on a research internship in Karlsruhe, Germany, near the French border. Mila found the position through , a program that connects students with doctoral students and researchers in Germany. In June, she鈥檒l start at the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology.
The research will use organic chemistry to create and identify novel chromophore molecules to be used in electro-optic devices, Mila explains.
鈥淢olecules that possess a positive and negative charge at each end can be used as switches and modulators in telecommunications and computing. Controlling the orientation of the charges can alter the way light passes through them, and that can be used to encode and transmit information,鈥 Mila says.
Mila says she鈥檚 also looking forward to improving her German and being immersed in a different culture, as well as taking weekend trips to her dream European cities.
