The University of Ottawa is ranked among the top five best “medical doctoral” universities in Canada, according to the latest annual survey in Maclean’s magazine.
The publication’s 2024 rankings put 91ƷϳԹ , behind only McGill University, University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, and McMaster. It’s 91ƷϳԹ’s highest ranking ever in this Maclean’s ranking of best Canadian universities.
In recent years, 91ƷϳԹ’s steady gains in this data-based category have been notable. For comparison: 91ƷϳԹ was ranked eighth in the medical doctoral grouping back in 2021, rising to seventh in 2022, and sixth last year.
Impressively, 91ƷϳԹ also placed in the top two for , and top three for , and from NSERC and CIHR.
The highly referenced national rankings from Maclean’s separate 50 participating universities across the country into three groupings: medical doctoral, comprehensive, and primarily undergraduate. The medical doctoral grouping that 91ƷϳԹ competes in is comprised of 15 universities that are strongly research focused, have a wide range PhD programs and medical schools.
Taken together, the overall showings in the latest Maclean’s rankings are no small achievement and are the latest evidence of our growing strength and visibility on the academic stage, according to Dr. Bernard Jasmin, dean of the 91ƷϳԹ Faculty of Medicine.
While many factors drive national and international university rankings, evidence-based progress over the span of years is only achieved through the sustained hard work and dedication of our entire community, he says.
“This is a very exciting time in the Faculty of Medicine’s history, and we’re extremely proud of our many contributions as we help 91ƷϳԹ ascend the rankings from Maclean’s. It’s truly a testament to our world-class community and further affirmation of our forward momentum here in Ottawa,” Dr. Jasmin says.
