DESCRIPTION:
Blue Marble Obsession (BMO) is an artistic endeavour based on the work of Michel Lussault, a French geographer whose research focuses on the Anthropocene. Created on January 27, 2023, at the Rize in Villeurbanne, France, BMO has been performed at multiple cultural events across France and Switzerland throughout 2024. This show, which is a monologue followed by a discussion, seeks to find a different way of sparking conversations with an audience about environmental challenges. Although it is based on a scientific question, it provokes reflection and curiosity about the topics it explores: widespread urbanization and the global livability crisis. The main goal of BMO is to encourage audiences to think, feel and talk about these issues, as well as potential solutions, through a performance centred on an iconic picture of our existence on this planet: Blue Marble (a photo of the Earth taken by Apollo astronauts on December 7, 1972).
EVENT SEQUENCE:
- First half: monologue (38 minutes) in French
- Second half: audience discussion (45 minutes) in French and English
MODERATOR:
Michel Lussault is a geographer and professor at the Universit茅 de Lyon (at the 脡cole normale sup茅rieure de Lyon, an affiliate institution). Professor Lussault is a member of the Environment, City, Society research laboratory (joint research unit 5600, National Centre for Scientific Research / Universit茅 de Lyon) and the Universit茅 de Lyon鈥檚 Intelligence of Urban Worlds Laboratory of Excellence. An internationally recognized Francophone expert in theoretical geography and urban studies, professor Lussault has authored over 120 academic articles and books in several languages since 1990.
