Why use novels as part of hockey practices and science classes?

Have you ever seen 6th graders walking around with their field hockey sticks under one arm and their novels under the other? Did you know that 8th graders invent telegraphs to facilitate conversations between Lizzy and 脡l茅na, who live in two parallel worlds? For several years now, we've been carrying out research aimed at building a positive relationship with language among young people and developing a taste for reading. We do this especially for young people living in minority language contexts, who rarely have the opportunity to experience language in French. At this conference, we demonstrate how our strategies also support learning in all subjects. We show that even in field hockey, reading counts!
Marianne Cormier
Department of Primary Education and Educational Psychology (DPEEP), Universit茅 de Moncton
obtained her doctorate in education from the Universit茅 de Moncton, where she specialized in education in francophone minority environments. Her diverse research interests include French language teaching, bilingualism, the integration of language into other school subjects, French didactics, reading comprehension, and education in minority linguistic settings.
