Congratulations to Faculty of Education professor Joel Westheimer, who was elected a member of the U.S. National Academy of Education and named a fellow of the American Educational Research Association. These two distinctions recognize his outstanding contributions to education and his influence as an internationally renowned public scholar.

Preparations for the 91st annual ACFAS conference are well under way at the University of Ottawa, which is hosting the event from May 13 to 17 2024. The Honourable Michelle O’Bonsawin, the first Indigenous Supreme Court of Canada justice, will be serving as honorary president of the event, whose theme is knowledge mobilization in French.

Cameron Smith, a fourth-year PhD candidate in the Faculty of Education, recalls a childhood in Europe immersed in a linguistic “hat trick” of English, French and German. This early introduction to multiple languages, he says, evolved into a career teaching French as a second language (FSL) and fuelled a curiosity about teachers’ experiences using devices in the classroom.
