Biography

Professor Chikoc Barreda specializes in Private International Law and Comparative private law in a context of globalization. She holds a PhD in Law (University of Lleida, Extraordinary Doctoral Prize, 2020), a LL.M (University of Montreal, 2014), a diploma in notarial law (University of Montreal, 2011) and a LL.B. (University of Havana, 2001). She has been a visiting scholar at the Institute of Private International Law of the University of Heidelberg (2022), the Centre for Private International Law of the University of Aberdeen (2023) and the Research Institute for Notarial Law at the Humboldt University of Berlin (2024).

Her research interests cover a wide range of topics relating to cross-border situations on civil and commercial matters, as well as the notarial profession. In the field of private international law, her studies encompass a variety of subjects, including contracts, cross-border teleworking, the circulation of notarial acts, succession, surrogacy, marriage, divorce and tortious liability. She is a member of the European Association of Private International Law (2021), the Quebec Association of Comparative Law (2020), the Multidisciplinary Observatory on the Future of Private Law (2022), the Centre for Private international law of the University of Aberdeen (2023) and the International Academy of Succession Law (2024). She is a member of the Quebec Chamber of Notaries and represents Quebec as general advisor to the International Union of Notaries (2023). Within this institution, she is a member of the American Affairs Commission, the American Notarial Academy and the working group on 鈥淒igitalization and authentic instruments鈥.
