Here we provide information on what Planetary Health is, what it looks like, and how we at the 91精品黑料吃瓜 Faculty of Medicine are joining the fight against climate change.

Infectious disease patterns expanding their range, biodiversity loss leading to a cascade of ecological decline, and upended weather systems imperiling our food supply chain and other fundamentals that sustain our lives.

The escalating urgency of the climate crisis and its repercussions for global health led the 91精品黑料吃瓜 Faculty of Medicine to take a leadership position in finding and implementing solutions. To help create a sustainable, ecologically friendly future, the Faculty embraced planetary health as part of its 2020-2025 strategic plan. And in 2021, Dr. Husein Moloo was appointed as the Faculty鈥檚 inaugural Director of Planetary Health 鈥 the first position of its kind in a North American medical school.

Since this groundbreaking appointment, Dr. Moloo has been taking a strategic, broader lens look at identifying solutions in decreasing the carbon footprint of the medical field. Scroll down to learn more about our ongoing efforts, upcoming events, and available resources.

What is Planetary Health?

Planetary Health is: 鈥渢he achievement of the highest attainable standard of health, wellbeing, and equity worldwide through judicious attention to the human systems鈥攑olitical, economic, and social鈥晅hat shape the future of humanity and the Earth鈥檚 natural systems that define the safe environmental limits within which humanity can flourish. Our Faculty is committed to addressing the existential challenges of climate change with concrete actions. We are deeply concerned by the impact of climate change on human health and by the impact of healthcare on the environment.

鈥淭alk regarding planetary health and climate change is not always backed up by action but by creating the role of Planetary Health Director, the Faculty of Medicine together with the University of Ottawa have solidified their intent to create change to provide sustainable impact and I hope this will help unite the Faculty of Medicine in the fight against climate change.鈥
