The research interests of faculty members at the University of Ottawa are varied and span in part the current fields of theoretical and applied areas of probability and statistics. Young researchers interested in applied fields, including biostatistics, population genetics, comparative genomics and genetic mapping, will find much to intrigue them. At the same time, those with a passion for theoretical developments will be challenged by problems in machine learning, computational statistics, data mining and random matrix theory. Those with interests in more traditional areas will study the many daunting questions posed by limit theorems, Markov chain and Monte Carlo methods, nonparametric Bayesian inference, nonparametric statistics, sequential analysis, stochastic processes, time series analysis and more. Challenges await you no matter which direction you choose, and the faculty will be there to advance your career. You will only be limited by your own imagination.

The Department has active research groups in several areas of pure mathematics, including: algebra, algebraic topology, analysis, analytic and algebraic number theory, contact geometry, differential geometry, discrete mathematics, graph theory, and logic and foundations of computing. Within algebra, our faculty has a cluster specializing in Lie theory and representation theory, which includes Lie algebras, Jordan algebras, algebraic geometry, group theory, representation theory, number theory, and quantum groups.  Members of the analysis cluster study the structure and classification of C*-algebras, deterministic and stochastic dynamics on algebraic and geometric structures, topological dynamical systems, and more.
