Copyright and Publishing

Open records at ARCS are available to the public and can be accessed and used under the Fair Dealings section of the Canadian Copyright Act.

This protects people who are using copyrighted materials from copyright infringement and allows for the use of material from a copyrighted work such as literature, organizational records, audio-visual works, or photographs, etc. without permission from the copyright holders.

People can use fair dealing to reproduce materials for the following purposes:

  • Research
  • Private study
  • Education
  • Parody
  • Satire
  • Criticism
  • Review
  • News reporting

Permission to publish or quote extensively from the material must still be obtained from the copyright holder, unless it is assigned to ARCS.鈥

If you are interested in publishing (including putting material on the web), you can contact us to learn more about seeking copyright permissions. Information about the copyright holder and/or any other relevant parties to records, is available on our archival database under the subject field: Title statements of responsibility, or in the Restriction field.

For more information on Fair Dealing, visit the Copyright Office.
