Since joining the University of Ottawa in 2016, Dr. Florian Martin-Bariteau has emerged as one of Canada’s top scholars on the legal and ethical issues associated with the rise of technology. As the , he is pioneering a research program on the policy issues related to (AI), , and cybersecurity, bringing a much-needed legal perspective to the rapidly changing tech landscape.
A technologist and creative turned legal scholar, Dr. Martin-Bariteau is an internationally-recognized thought leader on technology policy, engaged in shaping frameworks that safeguard rights and liberties in the digital context to build a more secure and inclusive society. His work has been published and presented globally, in French and English, to academic and policy audiences. He regularly comments on technology-related news in national and international media outlets.
As the Director of the , the country’s leading research hub in the field, Dr. Martin-Bariteau is playing a key role in establishing Canada as a leader in technology law, ethics and policy. He has become a major force in establishing collaborations that unite top academics from across Canada and around the world to define problems, identify solutions, and ultimately, shape technology policies.
Dr. Martin-Bariteau notably leads global research collaborations on responsible AI policy, for example, through the launch of the University’s in 2020, and programs funded by the France-Canada Research Fund, France’s CNRS, and the Alex-Trebek Forum for Dialogue.
He also serves as a co-investigator and group leader of several interdisciplinary research consortia, including the SSHRC-funded , the NSERC Quantum Consortium Alliance , and contributes to others such as , the Open African Innovation Research network.
Last year, he was a Fellow of the where he is now a Faculty Associate. Committed to La Francophonie and transatlantic research collaborations, he recently was a Visiting Professor in Law at the Université Jean-Monnet Saint-Etienne, and a Visiting Professor of Law at the Université Côte d’Azur’s AI Institute in Nice.
