In this engaging event, Professor Bertrand will explore the challenges of nationalist movements, the complexities of autonomy, and the successes and failures of institutional accommodation across the region. Drawing from case studies in Aceh, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, and Myanmar, he will examine how different governance models have shaped conflicts and resolutions.

Jacques Bertrand is a Professor of Political Science and Director of the Masters’ collaborative specialization in Contemporary East and Southeast Asian Studies at the Asian Institute, Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. He is also co-founder and co-director of the Post-Conflict Reintegration Lab (Postcor Lab). His recent books include State and Sub-state Nationalism in Southeast Asia (Cambridge University Press, 2025); Winning by Process: the State and Neutralization of Ethnic Minorities in Myanmar (Cornell UP, 2022); Democracy and Nationalism in Southeast Asia: From Secessionist Mobilization to Conflict Resolution (Cambridge University Press, 2021).
