Academic Freedom in Mexico & the Science Law Project

In recent years, academic freedom and university autonomy have been under attack in Mexico. Examples of this are the criminal procedures against former National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT) officials, the interference in the management of the Centre for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE) and the President's attacks on the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). In view of the above, it is necessary to critically analyze the initiative of the General Law on Humanities, Science, Technology and Innovation. This analysis will be made under the prism of academic freedom and university autonomy.

Our speakers

José Antonio Aguilar Rivera (Ph.D. in political science, University of Chicago) is a professor of political science in the Political Studies Division of the Centre Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE).

Alma Maldonado-Maldonado (Ph.D., Boston College) was Assistant Professor at the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Arizona (USA). Since 2010 she is a researcher at the Department of Educational Research (DIE) at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV) in Mexico.

Catherine Andrews (Ph.D. in Mexican History, University of St. Andrews, Scotland) has been a member of the National System of Researchers since 2004. She has served as Academic Secretary and Director of the History Division at the Centre Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE). She is currently a professor-researcher at this institution.

CAFA is a project created to increase awareness and advocacy in defence of academic freedom across the Americas, aimed at developing and concretizing relevant human rights standards, both as a means of protecting higher education spaces in the western hemisphere, and modeling best practices elsewhere.

Libertad Académica en México y el proyecto de la Ley de Ciencias

El Centro de Investigación y Educación en Derechos Humanos (HRREC) se complace en unirse a la Coalición por la Libertad Académica en las Américas (CLAA) en la organización de este evento en línea.

En los últimos años, la libertad de cátedra y la autonomía universitaria han sido objeto de ataques en México. Ejemplo de ello son las denuncias penales en contra de ex funcionarios del CONACYT, la injerencia en el manejo del CIDE y los ataques del presidente a la UNAM. En virtud de lo anterior es necesario analizar críticamente la iniciativa de la Ley General en Materia de Humanidades, Ciencias, Tecnologías e Innovación. Dicho análisis se hará bajo el prisma de la libertad académica y la autonomía universitaria.

A partir de 2010 es investigadora del Departamento de Investigaciones Educativas (DIE) del Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados(CINVESTAV) de México.

Catherine Andrews (Ph.D. en Historia de México, Universidad de St. Andrews, Escocia) es miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores desde 2004. Ha desempeñado como Secretaria Académica y Directora de la División de Historia en el Centro de Investigación de Docencia Económicas (CIDE). Actualmente es profesora-investigadora de esta institución.
